Kai's Birth Story | Utah Birth Photography

Kai's birth story, was a little less hospital traditional than most. This little buddy was a week over due, so mama was admitted to the hospital with hopes of a good old fashion birth, (minus the induction). After a few hours of occasional heart beat drops, the big men on campus decided that Mister Kai would need a more direct approach... my first documented emergency cesarean. It was a bit nerve racking for all, but only for a moment... the staff at the University of Utah hospital handled it effortlessly. Fine work ladies and gentlemen, he's a keeper. (Slide show can be viewed here).

My favorite things about this particular birth story, U of U Hospital is a obviously a teaching venue, so I had small lapses from reality straight into a Grey's Anatomy episode (true story)... and because of this, their were minimal second glances or confused looks by my presence (always good for the self-esteem), Charlie Sheen's cameo and lastly... Kai's face in the final frame, classic.
Also must give thanks to Melanie, one of the attending nurses who took my camera into the surgical room and caught a couple great frames... the story would not be complete with out them. Welcome to the world Kai guy.

Kristin and I were connected via twitter, (yay for twitter!) about a year and half ago when she was searching for a family photographer. She had been dating Nathan for about eight months and invited him along to her and her daughter's scheduled family photo shoot with me. I myself thought it to be quite bold, not only the invitation, but the acceptance. As I photographed them that stunning Fall afternoon, I sensed their lovely connection... Nathan's endearing demeanor towards both Kristin and Brooke and Kristin's confidence. I know she knew then Nathan's role in her and Brooke's life would be a permanent one. She was right...

The affair was intimate and so very exquisite. I felt honored to be among the select few individuals present for this ceremony and luncheon. Congratulations on your new family Kristin, Nathan & Brooke.

Brennan & Tessa Love Story

The "love stories" continue... Happy Valentine's Day everyone.

The year was 2001. Ninth grade, the best year of junior high had just begun. We were too young to drive, but too old to ever consider staying home on a weekend. So that’s where our story started... it was Friday night and everyone was “hanging out” (roaming the streets of someone’s neighborhood looking for something to do). It was that time of the day when we had to check-in with our parents to inform them of the plan for the rest of the evening. I needed to call my mom, but had no desire to go inside to use the house phone.

Luckily, standing right by me was a boy who had borrowed his dad’s cell phone for the night. The boy was Brennan and he had just started to hang with our “group.” He offered up his phone to me in exchange for a chicken nugget from the Wendy’s kid’s meal I had just bought. We made the trade and followed up the conversation by introducing ourselves. I asked him, “So what school do you go to?” He replied a little insulted, “Umm, Bonneville.” I apologized for not knowing and immediately questioned how long he’d been going there. “Since seventh grade,” was his response. Clearly seeing how uncomfortable I was, he quickly explained, “Well the only reason I know YOU go to BJH is because you’re a cheerleader.”

It turned out we also had two classes together. It couldn’t have been a more awkward first meeting than that.

Fortunately, my embarrassing first impression didn’t shatter the chance of us becoming friends. In truth, we were never really just friends... we were together. Boyfriend and girlfriend. That year we won “Most Lovable” at our Valentine’s Dance and by then we were very much in love. Two teenagers, who had no idea they’d still be together on Valentine’s Day nine years later.

We’ve had the rare opportunity to see each other grow up and watch one another become the young adults we are today. We share an amazing ten years of history together, “longer than most people stay married these days,” people often joke. But the next chapter in our love story (marriage) will be written later this year. We know it will be the perfect ending to this tale!

Thank you Tessa & Brennan... so so sweet. Ahhhhh, young love!

Ngoanh & Tam Love Story

Several weeks ago I received a phone call from my friend Shelly (of Orchid Dynasty & Kado Designs), suggesting a collaboration surrounding Valentine's Day. The concept consisted of simply photographing a couple and hearing their story... how they met, their love, their trials, plainly their "love story". A very simple, but meaningful attempt to explore what brings and keeps us together.
As we considered couples, Shelly's parents were our first choice, their story is quite unique and triumphant. Ngoanh & Tam, immigrants from Vietnam as a result of the "Fall of Saigon" in 1975, share their story in their own (translated) words.

Tam "My best friend had an older brother who was coming home from the war. She introduced me briefly. I didn’t think much of it. We were neighbors and I had seen him before but he was never home and I had never talked to him. I was maybe 19 or 20 at the time and my mother was very weak and ill. Being a single parent, my mother was afraid that she may not make it and that I would be alone, unmarried. My friend, brother and mother decided that the neighbor’s son would be a great person to marry. After a week of deliberation... permission & blessings, we were getting married!"
Ngoanh "I guess we are getting married."
Tam "A few months later, we were married."

Tam "Flash forward 10 years of really getting to know someone, having 4 children... life in Vietnam prior to the War was extremely harsh and difficult. I raised pigs and chickens for food and took care of the family."
Ngoanh "I was away a lot. This was during the time of social uprising and wars. It took its toll on the both of us."

Tam "My brother was a successful businessman and he had seen the changes in Vietnam, he warned us about the imminent danger ahead and wanted us to leave before it got bad. We attempted to leave several times but when we finally had the chance, we along with 200+ people were able to escape on a boat. We had heard awful stories of piracy, rapes and even murder. There were boats that sunk or disappeared, thousands of people did not make it. We were lucky, everyone on our boat survived but suffered dehydration, sun exposure, diarrhea and sea sickness. Sailing for days and nights, we arrived on the shores of Bidong. An island off of Malaysia. We were reconsidered refugees and lived in makeshifts camps for over a year. I don’t know how we made it, but we did."

Nyoanh "After we arrived, the Malaysian government separated us, the men and boys from the women and girls. We had no idea what to expect, we did not know who would help us. We just had to survive. I worked in exchange for food by slaughtering chickens and whatever jobs I could do. Our youngest was 2 at that time (Shelly). We stayed at the camp for over a year before the United States accepted us as political refugees. After a long process, we arrived in Utah the winter of 1979. We were sponsored by a lovely family."
Tam "We lived with the sponsored family for 6 months and moved out on our own. During that time, I had given birth to my son and we became permanent residences."

Ngoanh "I was so excited the first time I went to the grocery store. They had so much of everything. I bought chickens and meat and thought to myself, this is good. We can make it. I worked 2 jobs for a while, a fortune cookie maker by day and dishwasher at night. We had our own place, and for a little bit it felt safe."
Tam " When the kids were little, I cleaned houses to help. We worked so hard to save for a down payment on our new home. I was so happy. Looking back, the interest rates were like 13%. We both worked full-time at different times so we didn’t have to pay for childcare. The kids were in school and all of us worked hard to assimilate."

Ngoanh & Tam "We have a good life, the kids are all grown up now, and we have 8 grandchildren. We are healthy and retired. We are happy.
How did we fall in love? By living."

As I photographed Tam and Ngoanh in their home, heard their story a great level of emotions were felt. An incredible appreciation for their endurance, admiration for the host family that sponsored the Huynhs and pure awe. Culturally physical affection is not prominent, but the silent pride and love of what they two had accomplished, was strong and felt through their words I (literally) could not understand. Ngoanh & Tam will be celebrating there 43rd wedding anniversary this year.

Thank you Shelly for inspiring this project. And thank you Tam and Ngoanh for inviting me into your home and sharing your love story.

These two sweet ones were married way back when the grass was green and the arctic wind we now know currently in Utah was two seasons away (seriously, will the wind ever stop?).
This last set of images clearly reflect the love I felt from these two, a relationship with great humor and affection. I remember walking away from their reception feeling really good, I mean really good... like these two had something extra incredible going on. I also have an upcoming show of a portion of my portfolio and I cannot seem to narrow down the highlights to 12 images... yeah, it's next week. So it's a back to back Liv posts for you. These images came from a recent "invite a friend" dance class. Liv was the guest, and if you cannot see by the images, she was smitten and so was I.

I have to keep it together every time I look at these next two images. I love Liv, but these images make me love her even more.

Sometimes there are those families that you encounter that just seem so perfect for you... well, meet the Ries family. This is exactly how I felt when entering their home. I have wanted to share this shoot for awhile, but decided to wait and share the album design instead. Such a wonderful way to share your family images with others. I kind of went out of my comfort zone a bit using these sweet watercolor illustrations, but in the end, it felt right and looked adorable.

And for the record, I walked out of this shoot with the words "I wuv you picture lady", ringing in my ears... yep, totally sold on this family.

Miss Sulivan joined us early last Tuesday morning. She gave her mama a good 18 hour run for her money and I was present for the final six. When she finally arrived after 3 hours of pushing, many tears were shed... mainly by me. I am kind of baby when it comes to babies. (Prefer a slide show? You can view it here).

Kirstin's mama drove straight for 10 hours to see her first grandchild born and made it with time to spare.

Due to the early hour (it was about four in the morning at this point), I received permission to enter the nursery and capture Suli's first bath.

I feel so honored to be apart of each and every birth. Thank you Weston and Kirstin (she also is a photographer) for this grand opportunity.

Max's Birth Story (Utah Birth Photography)

Once again I had the gracious opportunity to capture a new life enter our chaotic world. It's baffling to me, with all the hustle it takes to get to the hospital after getting 'the call' how relaxing it actually is to be there... I really, really enjoy documenting birth stories. Here is Max's story...

Max's mama is Aria, a sweet and lovely gal who is also a photographer. She actually was referred to me ten days before her due date by one of her maternity clients who is one of my future birth story clients (thanks Kirstin!... also a photographer). How random and lucky am I? Shot a birth story and made a photography friend. Thank you, thank you Aria and family!

*Note... if you are wondering about Aria's consistent smiles through the entire birthing process, she had a natural (and long) birth with her first little gal. She decided this round to go a bit more assisted from the medical world. She couldn't get over how easy and nice it all was with some assistance from modern science. Her constant smiles were infectious and kind of hilarious. I loved it.

Miss Angie -- Utah Senior Photography

This little lass is my first senior of 2011. Miss Angie wanted to shoot at the Beehive Tea Room and what a wise woman she was in deciding to do so... I have always loved the Chinese lanterns and fun light fixtures there, so I made sure to compliment them with Angie's pretty face. Beautiful job Miss Angie and thank you.

Are you graduating this year? Can I take your picture?

P.S. If you didn't already notice my processing was a bit different for this shoot. I kind of dig it. You? Any guesses as to which photographer stayed with me the last two days and influenced this? I am just going to call her the curves queen... thanks little lady.

Fugal Twins -- 18 Months

Oh the Fugal twins! These little bundles first met my camera at three months and here they are looking so adorable at year and a half... crazy! Their wonderful mama set up this lovely orchard shoot and these tots brought their sweet mugs (a bit happier than last time).

Adelae's Birth Story (Utah Birth Photography)

I had two weddings scheduled within the three days prior to Adelae's due date. I was crossing fingers the entire time that she would listen to her doctor... and she did. Good sign for Mom and Dad, already a good listener. Slide show version can be found here.

If you are considering having someone take photos at your birth, I can not recommend this enough. As odd and uncomfortable as it may seem to have a photographer at a birth it's surprisingly not. These photos are priceless and will mean the world to you, (and to them) as they get older. Interested even a little? Drop me a line here.

Last evening's event was a success. By what definition, I cannot exactly pinpoint, but I know it was positive. I had the opportunity to meet and mingle with a bit of Utah's wedding industry. It was interesting. I discovered that I yearn to connect with vendors like I do my clients. I can't be all business, which can be a weakness, but a strength I suppose. It made me uncomfortable at times, but I liked it. I tried to talk the talk, but I found myself asking about the individual rather than the company. I wanted a connection. It was a bit disarming to learn more about myself. It was unexpected. I am certainly grateful that I had this wonderful opportunity to work with such fantastic women, (and a man named Sam). Thank you to all who participated and those who came and supported us. I look forward to future collaborations and additional moments of self-discovery.

You may remember the recent collaboration shoots I have participated in... Old Hollywood, Into the Woods and Asian Inspired (which still has yet to see light on this blog). This little diddy is a glimpse into the making of our first shoot. Our wonderful videographer-stylist-model, Elizabeth put this wonderful film together documenting our awesomeness.

My first birth story, my first "real" birth. I had sweet Liv via c-section due to complications, thus I feel as though I was robbed of a true birth experience... not any more.

It was so sacred, and possibly one of the most beautiful moments I have witnessed in my life. Thank you and a huge welcome to Mister Ruben.

For the second year, I have found myself published for covering the rally for water access rights here in Utah. For my faithful three followers you may remember last year's 1/8 page publication in American Angler Magazine. Well this year folks, thanks to Bryan Gregson's prose (once again), I have a full spread in The Drake Magazine... fantastic!

Unfortunately this year, access rights were minimized here in Utah. For more information concerning Utah House Bill 141 and it's journey, you can go here and learn more.

RAGNAR -- The Wasatch Back

"You and 11 of your closest friends running day and night, relay-style, through some of the most scenic terrain North America could muster. Add in live bands, inside jokes and a mild case of sleep deprivation. The result? Some call it a slumber party without sleep, pillows or deodorant. We call it a Ragnar Relay... ".

This was my weekend. 188, actually 189.5 mile relay, thanks to a surprise trail adjustment on my last leg. My van was filled with 5 friends from high school, a few that I had not seen since then. In 36 hours we ran up and down the Wasatch back, caught up on life, reminisced and made new memories. I loved every minute. Looking forward to 2011. Goooo Bobcats!
